Activist Collective Claims to Have Extracted Millions of Music Files from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights group has stated to have scraped millions of tracks from the popular streaming service and is getting ready to release them online.

Possible Impetus for Artificial Intelligence Development

Industry experts noted the seeming data breach could boost AI companies looking for material to develop their models.

An entity called Anna’s Archive said it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million entries of metadata such as performer and record names. The company, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the breach did not constitute its entire inventory.

“We have identified and deactivated the malicious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” stated a company spokesperson.

The Swedish company, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an investigation into unauthorised access found a external actor collected public metadata and used questionable tactics to bypass DRM protections.

Archive's Declared Mission and Worries

The streaming service does not believe the music taken by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for providing links to pirated books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

The group asserted the music files represented 99.6% of all music streamed to by its listeners and would be shared via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of sharing large digital files online.

“Of course the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great beginning,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “safeguarding humanity’s information and culture”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Battleground

A composer and campaigner for defending artists’ copyright, remarked the breached music would probably be utilized for developing AI models.

“Educating models on illegally sourced data is unfortunately common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is almost certain to be used instructing AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site alludes to a large online archive, a huge online archive of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to develop its systems.

The co-founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on the professional network that individuals of the public could in principle “create their own personal free equivalent of the service”. The executive added it could also allow tech companies to “educate models on modern music at scale”.

Copyright has emerged as a key issue between creatives, writers and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Government Considerations and Responses

Across Britain, creative professionals have raised concerns against a government suggestion to allow AI companies utilize protected work without consent unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every respondent to a government call for evidence on the proposal has backed artists’ apprehensions.

The secretary of state for technology, innovation and technology informed parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the issue, noting that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The government has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
